ICAN is proud to offer four types of service dogs for qualifying individuals: mobility assistance, psychiatric assistance (for military Veterans), facility assistance, and in-home skilled companions.
It costs ICAN $32,000 to train one service dog. However, clients are only responsible for $2,500*.
We are proud to offer our honorably discharged military Veterans with their service dogs at no cost.
*Please note that ICAN adjusts fee rates every few years. You will be required to pay the fee in place when you receive your service dog.
We will have regular check-ins with you throughout your partnership (8-10 years) at no extra cost. This will ensure that you and your service dog continue to be a safe and effective team.
Most of our dogs are purebred Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, or a cross between the two. For ICAN, these dogs provide our clients with the best temperament, size, and intelligence. Our dogs are bred within our program or are acquired from other ADI-accredited service dog organizations.
As the only ADI-accredited service dog training program in Indiana, we follow rigorous standards to not only comply with regulations, but also to take the best possible care of our dogs and clients. These include: • Maintaining safe, clean training facilities • Providing proper vet care for our dogs • Training with humane methods and positive reinforcement • Screening clients and dogs for ideal matches • Complying with all legal regulations for training, events, etc. • Renewing our public access certification every year • Keeping our accreditation up to date Most of our dog training is led by incarcerated individuals at three Indiana prisons. By taking 24/7 responsibility for ICAN dogs-in-training for two years, these handlers learn professional and life management skills to help them prepare for successful re-entry into their community. In addition to the work with their handlers, each dog-in-training regularly goes out into the community with furloughers, where they learn the ways of the world in which they’ll eventually work.
Yes — currently for Veterans in the Ft. Wayne area only. Our merger with Our Turn to Serve in April 2022 allows us to provide service dogs for veterans with combat-related challenges specific to PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and military sexual trauma. All Veterans must be referred to us through the Veteran Affairs Northern Indiana Health Care system. Currently, we do not place service dogs with civilians living with PTSD.
